DD Porter Delivers Complex £3.9 Million Catheter Lab Refurbishment at HCA Harley Street with Zero Disruption

HCA Harley Street – Catheter Labs Refurbishment

DD Porter Construction has successfully completed the challenging £3.9 million refurbishment and fit-out of two state-of-the-art Catheter Labs at HCA Healthcare UK’s prestigious Harley Street facility. The project, which also included new recovery suites and ancillary clinical areas, was delivered on time, on budget, and critically, with zero impact on the fully operational private hospital.

The project further reinforces DD Porter’s trusted four-year partnership with HCA Healthcare UK, with the construction firm having now completed over £16 million worth of specialist healthcare works for the provider.

Overcoming Urban and Operational Hurdles

Located in the heart of London’s medical district, the refurbishment presented a unique set of logistical and technical challenges. The works took place directly above live operating theatres within a continuously active hospital environment, demanding a meticulous approach to planning and execution.

Key elements of the complex structural and mechanical scope included:

  • Structural Steel Installation: The team successfully installed 27 tonnes of structural steel inside the live building, requiring exceptional coordination and precision to avoid vibration and disruption to clinical activities below.
  • Tight Logistics: Situated on a severely constrained urban site with no external storage or laydown area, DD Porter implemented a just-in-time delivery system and managed minute-by-minute logistics for all materials and equipment.
  • Specialist Installation: The scope culminated in the complex craning of a new rooftop Air Handling Unit (AHU), necessary for the new specialist MEP services, including medical gases, all performed within the strict parameters of the Harley Street location.

Commitment to Clinical Safety

Central to the project’s success was DD Porter’s commitment to maintaining a safe clinical environment. All high-impact works were scheduled meticulously around theatre activities, with infection control and dust management prioritised throughout every stage to safeguard staff and patients.

The resulting Catheter Labs are now equipped with the latest imaging and monitoring systems, designed to HCA’s demanding clinical and aesthetic specifications, ensuring a seamless patient experience in line with the leading private healthcare provider’s standards.

A spokesperson for DD Porter commented on the achievement: “Delivering a project of this scale and complexity—installing 27 tonnes of steel, coordinating minute-by-minute logistics in a tight urban environment, and doing it all above live theatres—requires a specific type of expertise. The successful outcome, delivered on time and with zero disruption to patient care, solidifies our reputation as a trusted partner for complex healthcare infrastructure projects.”

The project’s successful completion further reinforces DD Porter’s capability in delivering critical healthcare projects where operational continuity and exceptional precision are paramount.
