The Project
DD Porter was appointed to deliver the complex £3.9 million refurbishment and fit-out of two state-of-the-art Catheter Labs at HCA’s prestigious Harley Street facility. The scope also included new recovery suites and associated ancillary clinical areas—further extending our trusted, four-year partnership with HCA, with completed works now totalling over £16 million.
Located within a fully operational private hospital and directly above live operating theatres, the project demanded expert coordination and an acute understanding of the clinical environment. The works included:
- Installation of 27 tonnes of structural steel within the live building
- Structural alterations to accommodate new clinical layouts
- Specialist MEP services, including medical gases and AHU installation
- High-specification clinical finishes and infection control measures
- Craning of a rooftop Air Handling Unit – with no external laydown area available

Critical Factors
Delivering this project in a live hospital environment—without disrupting critical care services—required exceptional planning and precision. Key challenges included:
- Zero Disruption to Hospital Operations: All high-impact works were scheduled around theatre activities, with close coordination between our team and hospital staff.
- Tight Urban Site Constraints: With no external space for skips or storage, a just-in-time delivery system was implemented, requiring minute-by-minute logistics.
- Clinical Safety and Compliance: Infection control, dust management, and patient safety were prioritised at every stage, with compliance embedded into every process.
- Complex MEP Integration: Services were carefully co-ordinated around existing infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted performance of adjacent clinical areas.
The Outcome
The project was delivered on time, on budget, and with zero impact on live hospital operations.
The new Catheter Labs are equipped with cutting-edge imaging and monitoring systems and designed to HCA’s exacting clinical and aesthetic standards. The recovery and ancillary areas provide a seamless patient experience in line with the expectations of one of the UK’s leading private healthcare providers.
